Kannada film director Indrajit Lankesh, who is looking to launch his son Samarjit Lankesh as a leading actor in his upcoming film Gowri, discusses the decision-making process behind this choice, the difficulties encountered, and the lessons learned from the experience. - Did you always intend to debut your son as a lead actor in Gowri?
It was not initially my plan to collaborate with Samarjit. I wanted him to establish himself independently, and he was working towards that goal as well. He received training in theatre, studied acting in New York, and gained experience as an assistant director on various Kannada films. Throughout my career, I have been committed to introducing fresh talent to the industry. When the opportunity arose to work on a script, I believed that Samarjit was prepared for this challenge and suited the role. We even conducted auditions and a screen test before confirming his casting.
- How do you view the issue of nepotism?
In my opinion, being part of a film family has presented more obstacles than advantages for Samarjit. While star kids may inherit a pre-established fan base attributed to their famous parents, they often face the daunting task of carving out their own identity and reputation in the industry. Comparisons to their parents are inevitable, and breaking free from that shadow to create their unique path is a demanding journey. I understand this struggle firsthand, having been compared to my father, P Lankesh. Trying to match his exceptional talents as a writer, director, and journalist was unrealistic. Instead, I chose to forge my own creative path aligned with my passions and interests.As for Samarjit, I am not an actor and therefore do not have a fan base for my son to lean on. As a director and journalist, I have been involved in controversies and faced repercussions for my bold statements. Samarjit's challenge is to establish his own identity apart from mine and start fresh. We had creative differences during the filming, as Samarjit's thorough approach to character portrayal clashed with our oversight. He is realistic and understands the nuances of acting, unlike me, who lacks theater experience. Working with Samarjit has been a learning experience, as he is dedicated to his craft rather than seeking fame. I am more nervous than him before the film release, as this project is a significant challenge for me. However, I have faith in the story and believe it is my best work to date.In the world of film, the focus is primarily on the director and the producer, but being an actor is a favorable position to occupy. If you excel in your craft, consistently deliver strong performances, and establish yourself as a talented actor, you will find consistent opportunities for work.
